Provenance

Cut from a winter blanket woven in the Carpathian Mountain region, circa 1900–1920. Hemp grown and processed on the farm, wool from animals on the same land, dyed with madder root and whatever the surrounding landscape offered that season. Two narrow lengths joined by hand down the centre — the standard construction of a region where looms were domestic and cloth was made to width by joining rather than by weaving wide. This was a blanket made entirely from what was at hand, by people who wasted nothing and expected the same in return. That it has survived a century in a region that asked a great deal of everything is not remarkable. It is consistent.

The Making

Hemp and wool were combined for reasons that were entirely practical — hemp for its strength and durability, wool for the warmth that a Carpathian winter demanded without negotiation. The fibers were grown, processed, spun, and dyed within the same community that would use the finished cloth. Madder root gave the characteristic warm reds and earthy tones that natural dyeing produces differently every time, depending on soil, water, and season. The weave is dense and utilitarian, built for weight and longevity rather than handle or softness. The primitive centre seam is not a flaw. It is the structural logic of a textile tradition that worked within its means and produced, from those constraints, something that has outlasted almost everything made since.

The Garment

Vintage-inspired fit with dropped shoulders and a slightly tapered waist. Because this is cut from a single antique textile, there will never be another one exactly like it.

Care Instructions

Dry clean only. Due to the age and nature of the textile, avoid water, steam, and direct heat. Store flat or hanging in a breathable garment bag away from direct sunlight, which can fade antique dyes over time. Handle embroidered areas with care — the embroidered threads are original to the textile and irreplaceable.
