Provenance

Cut from a 19th century crewelwork curtain panel, backed in satin and made to hang at a window of some consequence. Crewelwork — embroidery worked in wool thread on a woven ground — has its roots in the printed cottons arriving into Europe from India in the 17th century. European weavers, unable to replicate the fluid botanical patterns of Indian chintz by printing, began stitching them by hand instead. What started as imitation became its own tradition. By the 19th century crewelwork was a fixture of the European interior, its curling leaves and stylized blooms as much a mark of domestic craft as of decorative ambition. This panel was made to dress a room. That it has outlasted the room entirely is simply the dividend of work done without shortcuts.

The Making

Crewel refers specifically to the two-ply wool thread used to work the embroidery — fine enough to build up gradations of color and shadow, strong enough to hold its structure across centuries of use. Stitched through a ground cloth of linen or cotton, the patterns were built stitch by stitch using a vocabulary of techniques — long-and-short, stem, satin, and chain — each chosen to describe a different surface or form. The backing of satin gave the finished panel the weight and drape required to hang correctly. What reads as painterly from across a room is, up close, entirely thread. Every curve, every tonal shift, the result of a needle changing direction by fractions. There is no shortcut in this kind of making. The surface shows every decision.

The Garment

Vintage-inspired fit with dropped shoulders and a slightly tapered waist. Because this is cut from a single antique textile, there will never be another one exactly like it.

Dry clean only. Due to the age and nature of the textile, avoid water, steam, and direct heat.
