One of one · c. 1900 · Southeastern Anatolia
Provenance
Cut from a Siirt blanket, Southeastern Anatolia, circa 1900. Made from the hair of Angora goats grazed across the high plateaus of the region — one of the few materials that could hold warmth against a winter that offered none. Siirt blankets were a staple of Anatolian and Kurdish households for centuries, woven by hand and passed between generations. Shepherds carried them into the mountains. Families slept under them. They were not made to be precious. They were made to be necessary, which is a more demanding standard, and a harder one to meet.
The Making
Siirt blankets were woven on narrow looms from Angora goat hair — prized for its length, softness, and exceptional insulating properties. The pile was not constructed during weaving but raised afterward, combed out by hand using a steel comb that lifted and separated the fibers into the long, dense fleece that defines the cloth. It is a finishing process that requires as much skill as the weaving itself — too little and the pile lies flat, too much and the structure loosens. The result is a textile that is simultaneously heavy and light, dense in its weave and open in its surface. The warmth it holds is not incidental. It was the entire point of every decision made in its construction.
The Garment
Vintage-inspired fit with dropped shoulders and a slightly tapered waist. Because this is cut from a single antique textile, there will never be another one exactly like it.
