Crewelwork — embroidery worked in wool thread on a woven ground — has its roots in the printed cottons arriving into Europe from India in the 17th century. European weavers, unable to replicate the fluid botanical patterns of Indian chintz by printing, began stitching them by hand instead. What started as imitation became its own tradition. By the 19th century crewelwork was a fixture of the European interior, its curling leaves and stylized blooms as much a mark of domestic craft as of decorative ambition.
