Linen sheets, painstakingly handwoven from linen or flax, were often monogrammed as part of the French "trousseau" tradition, where linens served as a prized dowry symbolizing family wealth. Monogrammed with the initials of the bride and groom, meant to accompany a young bride into marriage. By the 19th century, it became de rigueur for middle-class families to have their trousseau monogrammed in imitation of aristocratic crests, turning the practice into an art form.
