Provenance
Cut from a 19th century American overshot coverlet. Hand loomed with a technique using contrasting wool and cotton thread to create intricate geometric patterns, inspired by European designs and adapted to local traditions.
The Making
Overshot is one of the most demanding weaving structures in American folk textile history. The technique requires the weaver to "overshoot" the standard plain weave with a supplementary thread, creating a floating pattern layer that produces the characteristic geometric relief. These coverlets were typically made on four-shaft looms — a significant technical undertaking — and often represented a household's most prized textile. The patterns were passed down, traded, and adapted across generations, making each one a small record of regional craft history.
The Garment
Constructed as a traditional chore jacket. Because this is cut from a single antique textile, there will never be another one exactly like it.
