Provenance
Cut from a 1925 German grain sack, woven in heavy herringbone hemp for the demands of agricultural life. These sacks were more than functional objects — they were stenciled with tar in the farmer's name and personal markings so they could be identified and returned after harvest. The number of sacks a family owned was a direct measure of their prosperity; displaying them in the home was a quiet declaration of status.
The Making
Hemp herringbone weaving produces one of the most durable cloth structures in folk textile history — the diagonal interlace distributes stress across the weave, making it resistant to the weight and friction of repeated grain storage. The fibers were grown, processed, and spun on the farm itself, making each sack entirely self-sufficient in its production. The wear visible on this piece is the record of that working life: seasons of harvest, handling, and mending accumulated over decades of use.
The Garment
Vintage-inspired fit with dropped shoulders and a slightly tapered waist. Because this is cut from a single antique textile, there will never be another one exactly like it.
