One of one · c. 1930 · Turkey
Provenance
Cut from a hand-woven Jajim blanket, c. 1930–1960. Made in a family home — not a workshop, not a factory — by a weaver working a flat loom with cotton and wool dyed from plants, bark, and earth. The geometry was not decoration. It was language: lineage, place, belief, encoded in repeat. What it was never meant to be was a fragment. That it survives as one, still legible after half a century of use, is its own kind of persistence.
The Making
Jajim were among the most technically deliberate of domestic textiles — flat-woven without pile, the pattern built entirely from the structure of the weave itself rather than applied to its surface. Cotton and wool were combined for weight and warmth, dyed with natural pigments that deepened and shifted with time rather than fading to nothing. Each geometric motif was carried in memory, passed through households rather than pattern books. The worn color and the insistence of the pattern are not age — they are evidence of an object made with complete intention, in a tradition that trusted its makers to know exactly what they were doing.
The Garment
Vintage-inspired fit with dropped shoulders and a slightly tapered waist. Because this is cut from a single antique textile, there will never be another one exactly like it.
