C. 1800's/early 1900's German grain sack, made from heavy herringbone-weave hemp for durability, handwoven using fibers produced on family farms. They featured tar stenciling with the farmer's name and unique markings for return after use. Displayed in homes to signify wealth; the more sacks a farmer had, the greater their status. The sacks, showing signs of wear, were essential for storing grain.
