Cut from a mid-to-late 1800s Indian Kalamkari wall hanging.
The art of Kalamkari, which translates to “pen work,” is a centuries-old tradition of hand block printing and freehand painting on fabric. Created using intricately hand-carved wooden blocks. The base is an unbleached cotton. Its floral borders and intricate central motifs—often animals or botanicals—speak to the Indian artistic tradition of storytelling through textiles and an echo of 18th-century Palampore textiles. Originally intended to adorn walls as decorative hangings. The tones are muted and unevenly faded with time.
