Provenance

Cut from an early 20th-century Russian cotton roller print recovered from the reverse of an antique quilt. Although intended as backing rather than display cloth, the fabric was carefully printed with a repeating pattern—evidence of a time when even the concealed surfaces of domestic textiles were made with consideration. Protected within the quilt for generations, the cloth retains the softened color and irregular character acquired through age and use.

The Making

Roller printing transformed textile production by transferring repeating designs from engraved cylinders onto continuous lengths of cloth. By the early 20th century, Russian textile mills were producing distinctive printed cottons for clothing and the domestic interior, combining mechanized production with regional approaches to pattern and color. Subtle variations in registration, saturation, and wear remain visible across this cloth, giving the print a depth that cannot be replicated by contemporary digital methods.

The Garment

Vintage-inspired fit with dropped shoulders and a slightly tapered waist. The original textile has been thoughtfully placed throughout the garment, preserving the rhythm and character of its printed repeat. Because it is cut from a single antique cloth, there will never be another one exactly like it.
