Made by hand in California, from materials I find around the world.
9 oz Japanese linen-cotton denim · 19th-century boro futonji, Tohoku- numbered1/75
A zip-front engineer jacket, slightly cropped, in 9 oz Japanese linen-cotton denim with a soft, worn-in handm washed once so it arrives already broken in. The silhouette takes its cues from a 1930s engineer jacket, carried in the front yoke and pocket detail.
Those details are built from a 19th-century boro futonji sourced from Tohoku, in northern Japan.
The cloth
Boro — literally "tattered" — is the northern Japanese tradition of mending cloth by hand, patch over patch, across years and decades until a piece became a record of the family that kept it. In Tohoku, where winters were long and cotton was scarce and precious, nothing was discarded: a worn futon cover was layered with scraps and bound with sashiko running stitch, each repair a winter survived. What began as necessity is now recognized as some of the most quietly beautiful textile work in the world. Tonal, indigo-deep, no two pieces alike. The futonji this jacket is built from carries that history in every stitch.
The fit
Slightly cropped, with a 1930s engineer line through the yoke and pockets.
Each is made from a single piece of antique boro, hand-curated for its age and character. No two are the same.
