Made by hand in California, from materials I find around the world.
Japanese denim · repaired throughout with 19th-century boro, Tohoku - Numbered 1/75
A standard work shirt, repaired throughout with 19th-century Tohoku boro, not as a single accent, but worked across the whole garment, so the antique cloth and its mending become the character of the piece.
The cloth
Boro — "tattered cloth" — is the northern Japanese tradition of extending a garment's life by hand, patch over patch, each repair stitched in sashiko running stitch. In the cold of Tohoku, where cotton was scarce and valuable, a well-mended piece was a point of pride, and over generations these textiles became narratives in cloth. Here, that mending runs through the entire shirt: every patch original, every stitch irreplaceable.
The fit
A classic work-shirt silhouette.
Because the boro is applied by hand across each piece, every shirt is entirely its own. One of one.
