Provenance

Cut from a handwoven French cotton-linen mattress cover, c. 1890–1930. Constructed from narrow loom panels joined by hand — the standard method before wide looms became common — this textile was built entirely around function. The seams are structural, the weight deliberate, the weave dense enough to contain and protect. What it was never meant to be was beautiful. That it is, after a century of use, is entirely incidental.

The Making

Mattress covers of this period were among the most demanding of household textiles to produce — woven from a cotton-linen blend for strength and breathability, in panels narrow enough for a single weaver to manage, then hand-joined into a finished width. The weight and drape of the finished cloth reflect that intention: this is fabric made to bear load, resist wear, and last across generations. The worn color and visible seams are not age — they are the record of the object doing exactly what it was made to do.

The Garment

Vintage-inspired fit with dropped shoulders and a slightly tapered waist. Because this is cut from a single antique textile, there will never be another one exactly like it.

Care Instructions

Dry clean only. Due to the age and nature of the textile, avoid water, steam, and direct heat. Store flat or hanging in a breathable garment bag away from direct sunlight, which can fade antique dyes over time. Handle embroidered areas with care — the embroidered threads are original to the textile and irreplaceable.
